Extraordinary Tattersalls Mares Sale

The four-day Tattersalls December Mares Sale came to a close with the fourth and final session bringing the curtain down on a remarkable record-breaking sale. The turnover for the sale reached a historic 83 million guineas, reflecting a 20% increase from last year’s figures, while the average and median also achieved unprecedented highs.

Showcasing Filly Crown’s Lady Realises 34,000 Guineas to Annie O’Rourke

The highest-priced lot of the fourth session was the three-year-old filly CROWN’S LADY, who fetched 34,000 guineas for Annie O’Rourke on behalf of Michael Swinburn’s Genesis Green Stud. Offered by Consign Ltd., the daughter of SHOWCASING is a full-sister to Listed winner and Group 3 performer SHOWOUT and had added several updates to her record since catalog publication, including a third career win over seven furlongs in November. Genesis Green’s Michael Swinburn shared:

“That was more than I wanted to pay for her, but with Ed Harper pushing from the other side, the price climbed quickly. She has a great frame, comes from an excellent broodmare sire in Showcasing, and has a strong page. We don’t have specific plans for her yet, but we’ll discuss that soon. I had better leave now before doing more damage to the budget!”

CROWN’S LADY is out of SELL OUT, a Listed winner and Group 3 performer, and a half-sister to Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes winner SUEBOOG, who is the dam of notable names like Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan winner BEST OF THE BESTS and Listed winner MARIKA, a successful Group producer.

Chairman’s Statement

At the conclusion of the 2024 Tattersalls December Mares Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented:

“Exactly eight weeks ago, we reflected on the extraordinary results of our Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, where Book 1 shattered every conceivable record. The momentum from those incredible days has carried through to the December Mares Sale, culminating in a year of extraordinary achievements.

“Record after record has been broken in the past two months, with this sale producing sustained global demand and unprecedented highs. The 4,800,000 guineas sale of YOU GOT TO ME is this year’s highest price for a filly or mare globally, while the elite Sceptre Sessions provided unforgettable moments. In a historic first, this December Sale saw three fillies in training exceed 3 million guineas each, including the Group 2-winning sprinter BELIEVING and the record-breaking French Group 1 performer VERTICAL BLUE, sold for 3,200,000 guineas.

“Beyond these milestones, the sale statistics are remarkable. December Mares turnover rose over 20% to a record well above 80 million guineas, while average and median prices also reached new peaks. The combined turnover of the December Yearlings, Foals, and Mares sales has grown by over 30%, marking a record year for Tattersalls with total annual turnover up more than 20%. These gains reflect not only the strength of our British and Irish breeding industries but also their global appeal.

“We must acknowledge the immense international contribution, with buyers from over 30 countries, including strong participation from the US, Australia, China, and Japan. Their demand for high-quality European turf performers has played a significant role in this week’s success. However, the backbone of this market remains our British and Irish breeders, who have risen to the occasion once again.

“To everyone who has contributed to this year’s success, from vendors to buyers and beyond, we extend our deepest gratitude. 2024 has been a landmark year for Tattersalls, and this December Sale is a testament to the resilience and passion of the entire bloodstock community.”
